Johan Vineyards is one of our favorite producers, and we always enjoy tasting and visiting. We got to do a show at the winery on the release date of their new label, “Farmlands”. All of the wines were delicious, and we get some great insight into biodynamic farming. These two guys really care about the land they work with and the wine they produce, and we’re excited to share their thoughts with you as well as our thoughts on some of their wines. We taste a barrel sample of the 2011 Johan Vineyards Grüner Veltliner, the 2011 Farmlands White Table Wine, the 2011 Farmlands Pinot Noir, and the 2009 Johan Vineyards Three Barrel Pinot Noir.

Is biodynamic or organic farming important to you when shopping for wine or produce?

Dan got to go wine tasting in Virginia this past winter, and he picked three bottles to have shipped back for the show. Chas had never tasted Virginia wine before, so this was a good chance to share a new experience. We taste the 2009 Bluemont Vineyard “The Ram” Merlot, the 2009 Meritage from The Winery at La Grange, and the 2009 Nevaeh from Tarara Winery.

Episode 119: Wine From Navarra

February 28, 2012

When Dan was in Spain this past summer, he got to join in on a promotional tour of a Navarra with some fellow bloggers. Navarra is in Northeast Spain, right up against the French border. It has a long history of producing wine and we were all impressed with the quality and variety of what we tasted. Dan brought 3 bottles back with him, and had to do some extra work to get the fourth bottle. Our friend Beau from Beau’s Barrel Room connected Dan with this trip, and tasted all of these wines at the winery as well, so we’re happy to have him back to discuss his impressions now. We also have a couple of minutes of conversation with Ward Kadel (@drXeNo), and a few minutes of Beatriz Ochoa talking about the research room at their winery. We taste the 2007 Mil Gracias from Bodegas Ochoa, the 2006 Reserva from Finca Albret, the 2005 Laderas de Inurrieta from Bodega Inurrieta, and the 2010 Moscatel from Bodegas Ochoa.

What did you drink for Valentine’s Day?

In Episode 84, we tasted the Composer Riesling from RaSa Vineyards in Washington. Our friend Scott shared the video with the winery, and they were kind enough to work with him to get us samples of their current releases. Since Scott is much more familiar with wines from Washington, we thought he’d be a great guest to help us discuss the wines. They were all fantastic, and we hope you enjoy the stories about the wines that Scott was able to share. We taste the 2010 Lyricist Riesling, the 2009 Vox Populi Mourvedre, the 2008 QED, the 2008 Principia, and the 2008 Creative Impulse. We typically pre-taste samples to select 2 or 3 for a show, but all of these were drinking so well that we wanted to talk about all of them. Episode 105 will be split into two parts, with the Principia and Creative Impulse appearing in Part 2. The question of the day will wait until then.

This is the last of Dan’s notes from the trip through Navarra. Tasting notes are included for two more wineries as well as some final thoughts.

After reviewing the 2009 Commuter Cuvee by Grochau Cellars winemaker John Grochau got in touch with us and we went to visit him at his winery in NW Portland. He shared some great information about his wines and it was great to see a whole lineup targeted at approachable price points. We tasted the 2008 release of Grochau Cellars Dundee Hills Pinot Noir Willamette Valley Pinot Noir Cuvee Des Amis Pinot Noir and Matador. What type of grape would you like to see grown or grown more often in the Willamette Valley?

Andrew Minor from Basel Cellars joins us for episode 82.  We’ve enjoyed talking wine with him at tasting events in Portland, and we think that Basel Cellars consistently delivers solid wine, so we were excited to dive into some current releases and discuss what the winery is up to.  For this show we taste the 2007 Basel Cellars Claret, the 2008 Basel Cellars Malbec, the 2007 Basel Cellars Merriment, and the 2007 Basel Cellars Pheasant Run Vineyard Syrah.
