While out on a tasting trip, Dan discovered the 2011 Youngberg Hill Aspen Vineyard Pinot Gris, and wanted to share it with viewers who may also have a harder time with Oregon Pinot Gris. We also saw the 2011 Commuter Cuvee from Grochau Cellars on some shelves around town and we were excited to see what this year’s release tasted like. Both are good wines and both can be found under $20.

Do you have any racing goals for this year?

We’re happy to get back to checking out new wines on the market. The first wave of the 2010 Pinot Noirs are on the market now, and for this episode we check in with 3 wines we’ve tasted in earlier vintages. Our friend Beau from Beau’s Barrel Room has moved from San Diego to Portland, and joins us again to share his opinions on some Pinot Noir from 2010. We taste the Commuter Cuvee from Grochau Cellars, the Evesham Wood Willamette Valley, and the Owen Roe Sharecropper’s Pinot Noirs.

What is your favorite thing about Oregon?

After reviewing the 2009 Commuter Cuvee by Grochau Cellars winemaker John Grochau got in touch with us and we went to visit him at his winery in NW Portland. He shared some great information about his wines and it was great to see a whole lineup targeted at approachable price points. We tasted the 2008 release of Grochau Cellars Dundee Hills Pinot Noir Willamette Valley Pinot Noir Cuvee Des Amis Pinot Noir and Matador. What type of grape would you like to see grown or grown more often in the Willamette Valley?

It’s always nice when we can put together a show of wines were interested in tasting that also come in a very reasonable price points.  Oregon Pinot Noir under $20 can be a real challenge, so its fun to find good bottles in this range.  We taste the 2009 Grochau Cellars Commuter Cuvee Pinot Noir, the 2009 Red Door Cellars Pinot Noir, and the 2009 Bruno Willamette Valley Pinot Noir.
